SUMMER TV!!!!

Lets be honest , the first half of summer TV sucks!!! Everything ends, your left with crappy reality shows or random new shows that the networks are hoping might do something. The second half of the summer however is great , You got big premieres and then its not long till Fall TV starts.


Without a doubt the No.1 Summer Premiere that i have been waiting for is Breaking Bad Season 4. Did Jessie kill Gail???? (i hope so) Did the Chicken Man have Walter killed? THe only thing i can think about is the chilling end to last season with Jessie standing in the doorway pointing a gun at Gail, realizing he doesnt want to kill him , but basically its Gail or He and Walter.
It's situations like that, that make me love Breaking Bad. Its such a morally challenging show , How far will you go to get what you want and protect the ones you love??? Thats the world Walter White finds himself in , Here is a guy who was a mild mannered boring Chemistry Teacher in season 1 , now with Season 4 getting set to open he is fighting for his life as a meth chemist for a drug kingpin. Walter has killed people, watched people die and will definitely probably have to do more of the same.
The writing on Breaking Bad is spectacular , Acting is amazing , its just very very well done. According to Show Creator Vince Gilligan the show will end after Season 5, So two seasons left to end this story. I just dont see this one having a happy ending , i think it has to end with Walter dead either at the hands of Drug Kingpins or by a cancer relapse , he may or not have been able to take care of his family and its 50/50 whether Jason makes it or not. All i know is i will be there every step of the way with Mr.White for the ride!!!!



Next would be the final season of Entourage, now wait NO i am not trying to put Entourage in the same class as Breaking Bad , Entourage is definitely more of a guilty pleasure type show. It does have some great acting in it by certain people, Ari Gold (jeremy Piven) is a great character but other than him the best thing Entourage delivers is a inside look at hollywood and a guy fantasy of what it would be like to be super rich with your buddies. There are some funny moments of crude-guy humor. Entourage is a show i have been in on from the beginning and will see through to the end and part of me will definitely be sad to see it go.

Others im looking forward to unfortunately wont be coming on till late august- earlly September when Fall Tv gets kicking again.
Sons of Anarchy Season 4- This is a new love but one im definitely all in now. Cant wait to see what Jax and the boys in Charming have waiting for them when they get out of Jail.

Dexter Season 6- Now there are Dexter haters out there now including my boy who is on this very blog. I am the first to admit the Season Finale to Season 5 sucked Donkey Balls. It was the worst season finale of the 5. With that being said I have been in on Dexter from the beginning and it has been one of the top shows on tv consistently from the beginning. THere is a silver lining to Dexter , they finally started to hint at what the eventual end of the show will be , the ultimate confrontation when who Dexter truly is gets revealed to Deb and what she chooses to do. Will she be Harry and try to embrace it , or will she Capture or kill her murdering brother??? I personally believe that the sixth season could be it , they might could squeeze a seventh but i dont know , either way i look for it to rebound this year and will not give up on Mr. Morgan.
I believe my boy Dearing and i plan to either relaunch this blog or get a new one going and be a little more active in bloggin once our shows come back on. It should give us a little more material for you the reader of the media hero.

TOP 5

Let me throw this out there right from the start : Im not saying these are the 5 best shows to ever hit Television. These are my 5 favorite shows , the shows that have sucked me in the most and left me at the edge of my seat waiting more.

When thinking about this I found a couple of constants among each show. The first one being there all drama's , that doesn't mean i dont have love or respect for the sitcom but it is what it is. The second thing was every show revolves around a Central Character who is a very conflicted person , often times struggling with juggling a secret life. They often times tug that line between Anti-Hero (meaning bad guy that you still root for) or what often times they really are a Criminal and sometimes a psychopath!


ON TO THE LIST


No. 1


The Shield- This was a landmark show in a number of ways but mostly it was one of if not the first show to tote that line of being a show worthy of being on HBO but they did just enough to pass to be on cable.
The Shield is based around the fictional Farmington Division of the LA Police Department and Detective Vic Mackey played by the great Michael Chiklis. Vic Mackey personifies the Anti-Hero , in the very first episode of this 7 Season long Drama , Mackey shoots a fellow cop and kills him. This sets the tone for a man who stops at nothing to make busts as a cop , or protect his friends and family. Vic faces moral crossroads and usually always chooses the easy way or the criminal way out.THe duality of his character though often times showed him to be a very loving father who cared greatly for his kids. The Shield is also a show that i think avoided the peaks and calley's that hit most television shows. The Shield got constantly better as the show grew older and evolved. The Shield Series Finale is my favorite finale episode and ending to a Television show ever.The Shield was the cornerstone of the FX Network and played a significant role it getting to where it is now. To me the Shield is the greatest Cop show in Television History.

The Soprano's
Another Landmark show for Television history , the first of its kind and the show that put HBO's making Television shows on the map. The Soprano's centers around a New Jersey family both in the normal sense and a Crime Family. The lead character is the father Tony Soprano who is balancing his life as the head of a New Jersey crime family , with his life of being a husband and father of two kids. Like Mackey in the Shield , Tony Soprano often times found himself at a moral crossroads , balancing the criminal , do anything at any cost part of his mind , with his loyalty to his family.
In its run The Soprano's hit peaks and valleys but was always strong , held up by its fantastic cast and there great acting. The two main characters of the show James Gandolfini and Edie Falco (Tony and Carmella Soprano) were almost always nominated for awards and most times one them. The only complaint that could be made is that Show creator David Chase would put in a crazy off the wall episode in every season but all in all The Soprano's defnitely has its place in television history.

No. 3



This is a shared favorite between me and the Media Hero. Breaking Bad the story of Walter white aka Heisenburg, a Chemistry Teacher, Genius,Cancer Patient, Father and Drug Kingpin.
This show is quickly rising up my list and could be no.1 by the time it completes its run on TV. The AMC Drama is set around Walter White and his family and his ventures into the world of Crystal Meth cooking and distrubiting , Initially because he needed a way to leave his family some money behind when he thought he was dying from cancer. Walter and his partner and former student Jessie make a the best meth known to man! As the lead charcters in the other shows did , they often find themselves in the situations where they have to make decisions they know is wrong , but it is best for them to keep doing what there doing.
Breaking Bad was created by Vince Gilligan , its filmed on a fairly low budget in Alberquerque, New Mexico. I can honestly say that there is not a show that sucks me in and keeps me totally engulfed and interested in an episode like BB. It is an 45 minutes of tenseness every week and i cant wait it for to return for Season 4.

Dexter- Dexter is a Showtime drama starring Michael C Hall. It centers around Dexter Morgan a Blood Spatter Analyst for the Miami PD who moonlights as a serial killer. Ohh but wait!!! There's a twist he only kills people who kill people, he is a good guy serial killer, if there is such a thing??
This is another show that the Media Hero and I share a fondness for. Dexter hit a serious valley this year , but before this year had its finest year. They have a knack for finding fantastic season long guest stars every year , and its needed other than Michael C Hall is who is awesome , the rest of the cast kind of struggles. Although Dexter's sister Deb does touch the comedy base with some random combinations of cuss words. Dexter still takes its place on this list , but without a rebound in its sixth season , its gonna be knocked off.

24- Now let me set the record straight here , 24 is not in the stratosphere of The Shield or The Sopranos. 24 is more of what you might call a guilty pleasure , is it landbreaking TV?? No probably not. What 24 was able to do , was master the art of edge of your seat television, what i mean by that , is 24 is a non-stop adrenaline rush for the season , you never know who is gonna die , who is gonna blow up , who is turn out to be an undercover terrorist. Anchored by Keifer Sutherland as the Super Government Agent Jack Bauer a man who can die , be brought back to life and kill someone 30 seconds later. He to struggles with doing what he deems neccesary to complete his missions , whether that means harming himself , or others around him , He has killed partners , lost his wife , killed his father , Jack is the definition of a Patriot!!! Is 24 a great Television show , thats debatable is it a easy show to do get addidcted to absolutely!!!!!

Sons of Anarchy- Not gonna go into a long explanation here since I just blogged about it. Sons is quickly working its way up my list and if I do this list again , it will most likely have passed 24 and possibly Dexter. Fear the Reaper


LOST
I couldnt explain this show accurately if i tried. If i could you wouldnt believe me or you'd say that's stupid. With that i found myself locked in week and week out completely enthralled in the world of Lost. I had one thought at the end of every episdoe though: What the hell just happenned?.


Shows I need to checkout:
The Wire- I have been told by multiple people how great it is , with some saying its the best show in the history of television.

Mad Men- Like the wire i have heard the greatness of Mad Men touted by a number of people. I have heard however it is very slow moving.

Boardwalk Empire- I started this but didnt finish the first season , Its an HBO drama that has Martin Scorsese attached , two big things to make you watch. It also is sweeping most of the awards show's.

Hi. Media Hero Here...

First off I would like to welcome The Big Dawg to Media Hero. As I am sure you have noticed I suck something awful at this whole posting blogs thing and I am hoping his presence will help boost me to post more. He will be posting often as well I assume. But as many of you know "This may sound cocky but I used to work in TV" so The Big Dawg should have known when I started talking about this show that it would be an instant classic.

Since Big Dawg stole my thunder and posted about this series before the namesake of the website had the opportunity, I won't waste anyone's time with details about individuals in the show or information about the writers. I will just spend a few minutes of your day talking about my favorite characters and a few aspects about the show that really got me interested when I started watching. I, like the Big Dawg, had heard great things about this show from so many different people ranging from close friends to radio guys that talk about their Tivo all the time. So since I am the person that has to watch everything I DVR, I set up my DVR to record the entire season 3 of SOA knowing that I would be forced to watch the first two seasons before I watched 3. I bought season 1... knocked it out in three days... Then during a freak ice storm/gift from God, I bought and watched Season 2 in about 19 hours. Addicted. Plain and Simple.

Who do I identify with the most in this series:

At first I would have started out with Jax but after two plus seasons, by far my favorite character is Opie. He is the quiet yet strong best friend of Jax. For those that are watching the show and think he looks familiar... He is definitely the guy from Remember The Titans (Gerry Bertier). He is a father of two young children and he struggles mightily with the balance of being a single father and a club member. His character has gone from almost an outsider when he came out of jail to what I see as one of the more powerful members in the club. His influence is all over almost every decision Clay and Jax make.


After a long debate with the four or five people that are seriously addicted to this show that I hang out with, it has been determined that as much as I want to be Opie in our MC we plan on starting, I am not Opie. I am Tig, the speak first, think later smart ass ex Marine. I can handle that because even though I hated him for his role in the ending of Season 1. Tig has proved himself with some solid one liners and also he is simply a hardass. Tig and Clay have one of the type of friendships that only certain people can understand. So, I do accept my role as Tig in the Mansfield SOA Chapter.

Another thing I really dig about this show is the way that they incorporate covers of songs into each episode. The season finale of season 2's finale montage is set to a cover of "Gimme Shelter" originally by The Stones and the way the montage was shot and edited to the music makes it rank in the top 5 of most epic TV moments I have seen in the last 10 years.


This show, for me, is just something I can finally get into that I look forward to catching up and hosting 'Sons' night at the house for all the guys and the old ladies to come over and hang out. I love me some Breaking Bad and Dexter, but the lack of new Breaking Bad in my life over the last year and Dexter's last season flop of a finale has really elevated the excitement over a new show to get into. I am still very dedicated to Dexter and Breaking Bad, and I know the excitement for those will go up as their new seasons approach... but right now I am hardcore SOA.


A shout out to my "Old-Lady" Media Hero-ette who has a love for Tara, Jax's Old Lady. I must say the more she transforms into the role of "Old Lady" of a Son... The more I like her but also the more I realize she could completely kick my ass.

Dexter and More.

So after a few trips to Garland so the fiance could get herself a new whip (yeah I am that hood, I called it a whip), we finally got the opportunity to sit down and watch some Dexter! I can't believe there are only 2 more episodes this season! I guess since this is the first season I have watched along with the everyone else instead of on DVD or BluRay, the end has officially snuck up on me.

Part of me thinks we are seeing the end of Dexter, another part of me feels like we may be building up to a finale that is just as epic as last season's finale. For those who aren't up to date with Season 5.... STOP READING.


During the show this week I found myself with many different feelings going on. Part of me thought this episode was one of the best put out by these writers and directors since I started watching. It definitely ranked up there with a few of the Trinity episodes. As of this moment here, nothing can touch the finale of Season 4 but if these writers bring it... it could be topped. Anyways back to my different emotions... I was stressed, confused, a little annoyed, and even frustrated with this episode. The substories and plot lines are too much it seems. Jordan Chase, Lumen, this new chick connected to the rapist, Liddy and on and on just make me think there is no way Dex gets out of this alive or in prison. But then again, how many times have we thought "there's no way Dex gets out of this". Part of me thinks the lack of announcement of a Season 6 is adding to my frustration. I won't even touch on my feelings about Lumen and Dex getting naked... I need to feel out their response next week before I pass judgment.

As you see the title is "Dexter and More", this is the more part....

I realized last night that Dex ends in two weeks... Breaking Bad doesn't come on for 3 or 4 months... There I call for help... I need TV to watch once this show ends.

Where does Season 5 Rank? SPOILERS IF YOU AREN'T UP TO DATE.

Dexter Morgan, everyone's favorite serial killer, is once again all sorts of tangled up in an interesting situation of rape, murder, and lies. That's basically an average Tuesday for the guy. Season 5 is well underway and with the added star power of Julia Stiles, many viewers are almost forgetting about the thriller that was season 4. While season 5 definitely has had it twists and turns, in my opinion, I think it is going to have to take a CRAZY murder of a main character to even remotely compare the greatness of Trinity and Rita. But here is my look into season 5 and more specifically the last few episodes...

I love the relationship that we are seeing growing between Lumen and Dexter, I don't think it is remotely sexual. I don't see them jumping in the sack together this season at but I do see Dex realizing that for once he may not have to be alone in all of this. Granted, I am sure that will bite him in the ass by season's end because thats how the writer's usually work on this show. Dexter shows that towards Lumen when he gives her the blood slide in the last episode after knocking of Lieutenant Douchebag fro Jordan Chase's security. Are they the new power killer couple? ha

LaGuerta is a bitch. Thats all I have to say about that. She is all about herself and totally threw Deb under the bus to cover her ass. She may be my least favorite character on the show other than Quinn, and I think we all know the reason I don't like that tool. But LaGuerta is just annoying and I wouldn't miss her if Dex accidentally killed her.

Quinn needs to be killed. Dexter needs to Doakes that S.O.B. plain and simple. He is a tool, and his new "Matthew Perry" look isn't working for him (Sorry for the drug reference).

This season of Dexter has had one episode thus far that has really left me saying, Oh Crap. Season 4 had me saying that after just about every episode... I think as of today season 5 ranks right after 4 with close competition of Season 1.

Give me something special Dex, I am not going to stop watching you, like I did those selfish fatasses on Biggest Loser... I promise... but I wanna see something CRAZY.

Dexter is Back!

This week is almost over and it has flown by luckily because I am ready to see the next step in the life of our buddy, serial killer Dexter Morgan. He came roaring back in a season premiere that topped the charts for Showtime. It was the biggest ratings Showtime had received on a season premiere in like 15 years. This premiere, though, was something out of the norm for our friend Dexter. There was no initial chase of a new victim, there was no scheming and following like we have learned to love. For the first time ever we finally see Dex truly struggle with himself and what he is. We have heard Dex say he is a bad person numerous times in the past but never to the level of this last Sunday.

Dexter's behaviors in this episode were abnormal and honestly more 'scary' than I have ever seen him. He, for the first time, feels guilt over a murder. Granted he still feels no real guilt over any murder he has committed but he feels responsible for the murder of Rita. He should have killed Trinity the first time he had the opportunity. The absence of Harry for most of the episode, truly gives Dexter a feeling of being all alone. The only time we see Harry is when Dexter takes out the Redneck in what could possibly the nastiest bathroom in America. That was quite possibly my favorite scene of the whole movie, seeing Dexter finally just let loose and get his aggression, anger and even a little remorse out on that dude's face was AWESOME. This may be strangely demented on my part but I hope that this is the picture of the Dark Passenger this season. Just out for blood on anyone that has done wrong.

Moving on to my prediction for the season, Quinn (who looks frighteningly like Matthew Perry during his drug run on friends) will die. He and Deb are striking up this awkward sexual relationship, all the while Quinn is out searching for clues to lead to Dexter. Yeah I have said it in a previous post I know but dude is dead. Plain and Simple. Dead. I think Aster and Cody are going to start to question Dex more than ever but in the long run the kids and Dexter will be closer than ever over the tragedy of Rita's death.

This season is going to be an interesting one, mainly because of the whole Kyle Butler twist in the plot. I am hoping that this isn't the end of our friend Dexter, but I have trouble figuring out how he can escape this ordeal. Eventually, Dexter will either be killed, caught, or eliminated on his own... but please let it be like 3 or 4 years from now....

So, this time of year for the average guy is all about football, beer and brats. This guy is more than excited about the Cowboys, fantasy football and tailgating but I am more excited about five huge movie debuts, new series debuts and even a video game or two. Its gonna be a great fall season!

1. Dexter Season 5

So after the speed dating version of season 4, I was not happy that I had to wait 4 months to see how the life changing event left our friend. My speed dating attack of Dexter Season 4 was a 2 week nightly binged with Caty so I could finally be all caught up. Once the finale hit and Caty quit crying, we both wanted to jump straight into season 5 and see what happened. Dexter is going to a completely different character this upcoming season. Dealing with being a single father, a serial killer, and dealing with the fact that he caused the most traumatic event of his children life. My gut tells me that this season is it for the loveable Dexter. I just do not see how he can get himself out of this mess. We have seen him weasel his way out some complex situations but nothing like this! Dexter is the serial killer we love to support, kinda like the drug dealing badass that is Walt on Breaking Bad. To borrow an overused and misinterpreted saying of my high school students... this season is going to be uber epic.


2. Call of Duty - Black Ops

I know I am almost 30 and all that but I still love me some video games. It's strange but its like an amazing stress reliever for me after a frustrating day at work or a bad baseball game. I just want to get online and either shoot fake terrorist or dominate some 16 year old acne ridden punk in Madden. Yeah I said it, it makes this almost old guy feel good to whoop up on teenagers in video games! This Black Ops game is expected to be the biggest release of the year. Its the follow up to Modern Warfare 2. Although it is produced by a different gaming developer, and their releases have been less than appealing in the past, I still plan on purchasing this game and giving it a run through the old xbox. I will play with my 40-something year old brother, which his addiction to this game is WAY more embarrassing than my addiction, and his police buddies. We will lose to the little youngins, we will beat them sometimes, but overall we will just escape into the virtual world for an hour or two a night to relax from a crazy day.


3. The City

When we went and saw Inception, which I swear I will eventually give my review for (Kinda want to see it again), there was an action packed trailer for a new flick coming out that had me all sorts of excited. Then I saw who is directing it and I got nervous. Ben Affleck is directing himself again in a heist movie, but then I remember that Affleck directed Gone Baby Gone, which is in my top 5 all time movies. So I am expected big things out of this movie. Maybe my expectations are going to be to high, but I don't care. The trailer showed a few plot twists already and everything I am hopes it isn't going to fall into the category of the "trailer showed all the good parts" type of film. Jeremy Renner is also in this movie and after his performance in "The Hurt Locker", I have a man crush on him. He is an outstanding up and coming actor. This movie is going to be SICK...... I hope!


4. Mavs Kickoff New Season

Yeah so what if I am letting my sports side jump on the screen again here at MH. The Dallas Mavs are my team in the NBA, and other than baseball, basketball is my game. I enjoy a good football game don't get me wrong but I would rather sit through 3 and a half hours of baseball or a basketball game ANYDAY. The critics say the Mavs got worse but standing still in free agency, but me I see it as just more time for what looked to the best team in the NBA for a month or so to gel in the off season. We shall see, either way, if they go 82-0 or 10-72, I am still going to watch and still cheer. So hurry up Basketball season

5. Texas Rangers Playoff Baseball

Do you know how long it has been since the Rangers have played playoff baseball? Do you know how long it has been since they won a series in the playoffs? Both answers are very depressing in my opinion... BUT the night that the Rangers dumped champagne on each other in honor of their divisional championship, the new owner Chuck "Baseball Jesus" Greenberg stated this: "This is what success looks like, and be ready to see this often Rangers fans". I am geeked up that the new owners are so in touch with their fanbase. It's Time! Rangers Baseball! Get Healthy Josh.

"Dextergasm?"

So Comic-Con is going on this weekend and of course I was glued to the website looking for updates on my shows while listening for the any heads up of great new shows to come. Day one of Comic-Con did not disappoint with the Dexter panel taking the stage to discuss Season 5 coming up in September. Jennifer Carpenter joined her cancer-free husband Michael C Hall (which that marriage still trips me out alittle, they are brother and sister! ha) and some of the big wigs on the show to talk up this season, field questions from fans, and also premiere the big trailer for Season 5.

First and foremost, lets talk about this trailer. If you have not seen the conclusion of season 4 now is the time to go and watch it and NOT read any further. As we Dexterholics know, Season 5 ended with a huge life changing event. The murder of Rita by Trinity really sent the Dexter world into a whirlwind. Things were finally shaping up for Dexter to have a "normal" family life with his beautiful wife and cute little fat baby, and this happens. I have quite a few ideas for this next season. Seeing the trailer (which I will post at the end of the post) really got my head spinning on a few of the ideas I had. Then I read the full transcript of the Comic-Con Panel and I felt like a Media God because one of the big wigs said something directly to one of my thoughts I was having. Ok here we go...

#1 - The effect of this on Dexter - The trailer makes it very obvious that Dexter will kill again this season when they show him talking to to Harry and telling him how killing makes him a better father. What would the show be like without Dex killing bad guys.... refer to season 2, I swear I know he did kill people but I can't recall a single one other than Doakes. Every other season I can name multiple victims. Anyways, here's my thoughts on the effect on Dexter. He became the person he is because of a traumatic event in his childhood that for the longest time he blocked out. What kind of effect will this event which is fresh and vivid in his mind have on him this go round?

"We wanted to process this huge event that's almost another origin story," said Johannessen. "This is an adult origin story in a way. This is not something that happened to him when he was three years old. We don't continue the facts of season four for very long, but this set of events he brought on himself very much permeate season five."

I truly believe we are going to see a completely different "Dark Passenger". A very angry, raw, and brutal Dexter. I have a feeling that the first kill after the murder will be more of an impulse kill and could potentially violate the code. The final scene of the trailer shows Dex going ballistic and blood is everywhere, while you don't see the victim, it is obviously a very emotional moment for him. The voice over the shot says "Normally having a target would make me feel good, but now it means nothing." Dexter is not only going to battle bad guys this season he biggest enemy may be himself. If I was writing this series and wanted to really get it rolling quick, Dex makes an impulse kill and draws attention to himself in a very unwanted/unneeded manner. Personally, I like the 'nervous' Dexter, I enjoy when he is constantly worrying about the fuzz.

#2 - The trailer also shows Quinn on the case and suspecting Dexter is involved.... I am assuming that Quinn didn't get the memo about Doakes doing the same thing a few seasons back. Its been nice knowing you dude, and congrats on getting it on with a murderer's psycho daughter, but you are as good as dead bro.

#3 - Dexter and Harrison - Probably the most heart-breaking moment in the trailer was Dexter holding little Harrison and saying to him "I am the reason your mother is dead, you are going to hate me someday". Dexter is a good dad in my opinion...when he is there. Its weird to say that about a serial killer but still he was in a perfect place before this. Does this event launch Harrison into a similar pathway as Dexter? Obviously, the writers are mimicking Dexter's early life experience here. Granted the show would either have to do a 'fast forward' for season 6 or be around for like 7 to 10 more years (I would probably be ok with it) but I would love the opportunity to hear Dexter talk to Harrison (Lil' Harry) about the code and everything that he was taught. Whats your take on the Harrison and Dexter relationship of this season? Granted it can't be too complex, the kid is like 6 months old, but it does have a very complex possibility. Brilliant Writing.

This season has so many potential subplots and different directions it could go, that I am just ready for the dang thing to start. I upgraded the Uverse to get Showtime and Season 5 will be the first season I don't watch on DVD. This is the first show I can honestly say I am completely and 100% addicted to. I am not sure how I will handle not being able to see the next episode immediately. It feels like I am 14 again and I am waiting for Joey to choose between Dawson and Pacey. Yes I did just make a Dawson's Creek reference, and don't act like you weren't watching also.
